Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within the city.

Warning: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and presented the first table of heroes who will split off from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the influential clan could help the group enter places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to travel to Timmony in search of the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to form the Questers and Planners parties.

Viewers can expect learning which players will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
