The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
