Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
