The Worst Games of the Year 2025, Based on Review Aggregator Metacritic

At every turn, gamers are foaming at the mouth to post their lists of the best games of 2025. Yet, where are the flops, the failures? Let's take a few moments to examine the most panned games of the year, according to the critical consensus on Metacritic. Could each of these games truly as terrible as their scores suggest? We shall see.

10. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

Metascore: 54/100, Audience Score: 3.4/10

First impressions to this tech demo were shaped by its $9.99 price tag, with many feeling cheesed off it wasn't a complimentary title like competing console launches. Reviewer sentiment spanned a wide spectrum, from harsh disappointment to more generous appraisals that highlighted the delightful software underneath the controversy. In spite of the controversy, the title proved to be a surprisingly robust commercial performer during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Aggregate Score: 53/100, Audience Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "beyond a racing game," this driving sim from Competition Company and Teyon was met with pretty unanimous reviews. The consensus was that the game was lacking in almost every category, notably in a year packed with high-quality racing games. For many, this underwhelming entry was advised to be left on the shelf.

8. Bubsy's Purrfect Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 8.6/10

To begin with: the awkward punctuation is a minor annoyance. This anthology of retro platforming games showcases a "attitude"-filled feline known for non-stop quips. The consensus was that these games haven't aged well in their time and feel dated with age. The notably positive user score remains a curious oddity to the Metascore.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Metascore: 53, Audience Score: 3.5

This anime-inspired fighter encountered harsh criticism from both professionals and the dedicated community. Issues included a limited fighter lineup and a minimal offering of content. User reviews was notably negative, with some stating a wish that the title's flop would serve as a lesson for future projects.

6. Neptunia Motorcycle Game

Metascore: 51, User Score: 5.3

A part of the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this motorcycle action game tasks players with collecting Dogoos. Critics argued that its goal to channel a rolling-collection feel ultimately fell flat, coming across as more of a low-effort product than a substantial series entry. Its 3-hour duration combined with a $40 price tag was criticized.

5. Captain Blood

Aggregate Score: 50, Audience Score: 5.3

This title is a resurrected relic from the Xbox era, launched after years and years in legal limbo. The publishers consciously chose to release the game as an period-accurate artifact of its time, acknowledging that contemporary players might dislike its retro feel. As such, many reviews concluded that the fascinating story of its resurrection was far richer than the game itself.

4. Scar-Lead Salvation

Aggregate Score: 44, User Score: 2.4

This anime-art third-person shooter modeled after games like *Returnal* failed to impress with critics. The main issues were uninspired foes, monotonous stage design, and a snoozy narrative. A particular feature involving the character's attire was seen as adding nothing and undermined the game's overall experience.

3. Paramedic Simulator

Aggregate Score: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Recall the strategic surgery games of the past, then strip away the compelling story. That, according to reviews, is roughly *Ambulance Life*. Critics found the emergency response sections to be a slog, and the story's portrayal of mental health topics was criticized as being insensitive. The overall experience was deemed largely unsatisfying.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, Audience Score: 5.8

This new direction for the classic virtual pet formula transforms the franchise into a town-management title. The result, according to critics, was a vapid collection of simple minigames that very soon grew tiresome. Some reviews went so far as to declare it one of the worst titles available on its platform, pointing to a profound lack of satisfying gameplay.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, Audience Score: 2.5

Positioned as a major open-world action game from a ex-Rockstar veteran's experienced developers, *MindsEye* was a spectacular disappointment. Reviews savaged its poor shooting mechanics, uninspired storytelling, and a multitude of game-breaking glitches. Critics found it to be a significant step back compared to previous-generation games in the action genre. Despite the sea of negativity, a small handful of fans found value in the experience, providing a rare counterpoint.
